Multi-faceted singer Julia Michelle is an increasingly up and coming figure of the Australian folk scene, having come from a theatre, coverband and choral background. With the ability to sing in many musical genres, she entertains audiences with her blend of ballads with a folky flavour, that incorporates songs ranging from celtic, to country, and traditional to contemporary. Julia's beautiful voice is her major calling card, and she accompanies herself on guitar and piano. However, she has enjoyed a happy-go-lucky, Jack-of-all-trades approach to folky instruments, and can pick out a tune on harp, fiddle, accordion, tin whistle and mandolin. Julia is currently working on her folk album "Rathlin Island" with one of her musical collaborators, Rob Broomhead. Rob, a talented musician, plays bass guitar and piano, and is a highly sought-after sound engineer for the entertainment industry. Julia's singing background and roots stem from childhood, through involvement in church music and performing arts focused schools. Her voice was significantly developed in her late teens/early 20's through classical singing training, and involvement in prominent choirs including Monash Uni's "Monash Women's Choir" and "Viva Voce", and later in 'The Tudor Choristers'. She progressed to local theatre roles and chorus parts in shows including 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Godspell', 'Pirates of Penzance', 'Jekyll and Hyde', 'Sweeney Todd', and 'The Mikado' amongst many others. She then branched out as a working singer, gigging with cover bands 'Abbasession' and 'The Uptown Girls', before taking up a residency as a yodeller and floorshow artist at 'The Cuckoo Restaurant', where she worked for 7 years. During this time, she was also featured as a professional soloist at The Toorak Uniting Church Choir, and The Wesley Church Choir (Melbourne CBD).These days, Julia's latest gigs have been singing with small theatre company "The Keyhole Cabaret". However, always a musical chameleon, Julia is drawing on her talents and vast experience to style and herself as a folk artist, and channels all her music abilities into recording and performing at folk venues around Melbourne. |
